Virgin Media has taken a drastic step and put fibre optics for its broadband on poles, instead of the customary underground cabling that most others in the industry do. Virgin is currently trial running its broadband in Woolhampton, by running its cables on telephone poles

Hmmmn... this begs the question. Why? They will have to dig up the cables they've buried some time ago...

I guess it's good, just as long as people in rural areas get faster Internet speeds. Virgin is hoping that this trial run would prove that they would be able to deliver 50mbps speeds to rural areas.

It's novel. I think Virgin is looking at ways to be faster in deploying their cables. If this turns out to be successful, they don't have to dig underground anymore... instead they could use the existing network of telephone poles. That would be cheaper for them in the long run.
