2009 estimates have placed 136.7 million set top boxes sold, 42% up from 2008's actual figures of 131.2 million, Tech Watch reports. I think it's a good year for STB manufacturers!

Well, even with the recession under way, people needed to buy set top boxes because getting entertained at home is actually cheaper than going out. What's more with the analogue TV switch off, more people had to buy it or get to watch no TV whatsoever.

I think set top boxes have been steadily rising since 2006, because of the reasons you mentioned. And industry watchers are saying that sales are expected to rise further.

And to think the demand for set top boxes had been limited to North America and Europe. HDTV and digital TV is not yet that big in Asia and other parts of the world, so more shipments are to be expected.
