Default Sky will fight if BT gets special treatment.

Sky and Carphone Warehouse announced that they will fight any move to allow BT to increase levies and fees to help it reduce the company's pension fund deficit and wholesale charges. Sky for one thinks that it is unfair that it should bail out BT for mismanaging its funds.

This is after Ofcom solicited opinions for a proposed price increase for BT right?

Yup. Ofcom wanted to consult other companies in the industry. Ofcom wanted to know if BT should be allowed to increase wholesale charges to help it recoup its servicing cost and deficit.

If Sky can be believed, then such a move could increase fees by as much as 4%. Sky and Carphone has already said that they will most certainly pass these increases to their customers.

BT needs all the help it could get, that deficit has more than doubled to £9.4 billion in just six months!

Yup, that much money has been lost and needed by BT for its pension fund. And get this... that much even after the company doubled its deficit payments from £280 million to £525 million!

Hmmmn, I don't think Sky and Carphone have a say in this. If BT wants to increase fees to cover for its costs, it can legally do so. Carphone Warehouse and Sky would have to pay for that if they want to continue renting BT's copper phone lines, which they use for their own services. If I were selling apples, I would only do so if i make a profit.

But the issue here is that the increase is not because of service upgrades or operational improvements. It is because BT simply mismanaged its funds. That is why Sky and Carphone do not want to pay for BT's pension fund deficit.

Nothing is final for now, but am sure if Ofcom says that BT could increase it, then BT will.
