Default iPlayer gets a record 68.7 million requests

iPlayer had another record month in February after serving over 68.7 million requests. This represented an 81% rise over the previous corresponding period. This is great news for the BBC, isn't it?

Yup, saw that report. I can't imagine that on the average, people spent about an hour each week watching iPlayer programmes, and what's more people spent close to 3 hours listening to radio programmes!

Well, I won't be surprised, I've read that the iPlayer was installed on over 1 million Wii consoles just in February alone, proof that expanding to new platforms is paying off for BBC.

It's an even greater news for EastEnders Live because it fueled 1.1 million requests for TV programs. Great month for comedy programs too!

I was reading this statistics report from the BBC, and guess what.. a majority of iPlayer users were male (only 30% were female!) last year, but this year, there are now roughly equal number of men and women iPlayer users.

Frankly, I'm quite amazed. When it first came out, I didn't think that many people would use the iPlayer.

I really don't get the importance of this statistic! I mean women watch TV too, and they miss shows too. Do they not?

I think this is valuable from a marketing standpoint. It used to be that a lot of iPlayer users were man, so BBC could market the iPlayer for sport programmes and the likes. Now with women coming in, they could go for marketing efforts geared at both genders.
